Brussels Protests Demand Better Conditions for Farm Workers, Firefighters
Firefighters representing 20 European countries assembled in the Belgian capital to call for additional staff and equipment, while the European Federation of Food, Agriculture and Tourism Trade Unions (EFFAT) arranged a separate protest focused on safeguarding agricultural workers' rights.
The firefighters' march started at approximately 11 am local time (1000GMT) near Brussels North Station before heading toward Tour & Taxis. Brussels firefighters and representatives of Belgian labor organizations also took part.
The demonstration, organized by the European Federation of Public Service Unions, drew attention to growing pressure on emergency services, including personnel shortages, a rising number of emergency calls, increasingly frequent forest fires, and climate-related disasters. Participants also raised concerns about occupational cancer risks and worsening workplace conditions.
The unions urged European governments and EU authorities to allocate more funding to emergency services, arguing that additional resources are necessary to protect the public and ensure firefighters receive sufficient support.
Separately, EFFAT invited agricultural employees and union representatives to gather at Place Jean Rey between 2 pm and 4 pm. The organization called for improvements across the farming sector, fairer working conditions, and the preservation of social requirements within the EU's Common Agricultural Policy.
