EU Calls for Urgent Restoration of Navigation in Strait of Hormuz

(MENAFN) European Council President Antonio Costa said on Wednesday that restoring free maritime navigation through the Strait of Hormuz is both “crucial and urgent,” warning that continued disruptions could deepen the global economic impact of the ongoing conflict.

Speaking in Doha after meetings with Gulf leaders, Costa said the situation in the region is already having severe worldwide consequences, adding that delays in resolving the crisis would only intensify the damage.

“This war has already had disastrous consequences that are being felt all over the world. And that will only get worse, with every day without a solution to this conflict. Restoring freedom of navigation in the Strait of Hormuz is crucial and urgent,” he said.

He emphasized the European Union’s commitment to ensuring the safe and uninterrupted movement of commercial shipping through the waterway, which serves as a key corridor for global energy transport.

Costa also said European efforts are being coordinated with international partners, including initiatives led by France and the United Kingdom, aimed at forming a maritime security coalition to protect shipping in the region.

During his visit, he met with the leaders of Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates to discuss de-escalation efforts and broader regional stability.

He reiterated the EU’s support for diplomatic solutions, calling for renewed momentum following a recently brokered ceasefire to address wider security challenges.
