Slovak PM Urges EU to Address Internal Issues Before Targeting Russia
Unlike many other member states, Slovakia under Fico has declined to supply weapons to Ukraine and has frequently opposed EU measures targeting Moscow.
Commenting on the European Commission’s 20th sanctions package, Fico said the “EU has more important obligations and priorities than sanctions against Russia.” Speaking on Saturday, he added that previous rounds of EU sanctions have failed to deliver any benefit to member states.
“We are only hurting ourselves,” Fico said, pointing to “worrying” economic trends and declining competitiveness across much of the bloc.
He noted that at next Thursday’s informal EU summit, he intends to press fellow leaders to focus on the union’s most urgent problems:
“Let us put the economy in order. Let us put foreign policy in order. Let us have the courage to say that some commissioners are not doing well in the European Commission and let us replace them.”
The new sanctions package proposed by the commission would impose a full maritime services ban on Russian crude oil, target multiple Russian banks, and restrict exports of metals, chemicals, and critical minerals.
Fico has also strongly criticized the EU’s REPowerEU initiative, which aims to fully eliminate Russian gas imports by November 2027, calling the plan “suicide.” Slovakia has announced that it will take legal action against Brussels over the measure.
