EU Stands with Pedro Sanchez Amid Criticism Over Social Media Rules

(MENAFN) The European Union expressed strong condemnation on Friday against attacks targeting Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sanchez, reaffirming full support for the leader as his government faces criticism from major tech figures over planned social media regulations.

“Full solidarity to the Spanish prime minister. We, of course, condemn any attacks on the leaders of our member states,” European Commission spokesperson Thomas Regnier said during a midday briefing in Brussels.

Regnier emphasized that the EU supports both national and European efforts to hold digital platforms accountable, highlighting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA) as a central tool. The legislation requires major online platforms to address illegal content, reduce risks to minors, and improve transparency while safeguarding fundamental rights.

The comments come in the wake of public objections from tech industry leaders. Telegram co-founder Pavel Durov criticized Spain’s proposed rules, warning they could threaten “internet freedoms” and potentially turn the country into a “surveillance state.”

Earlier this week, US tech billionaire and X owner Elon Musk also attacked Sanchez on social media, calling the Spanish leader a “totalitarian fascist” and a “tyrant.”

Spain’s government unveiled the proposals on February 3, including a plan to bar minors under 16 from accessing social media platforms as part of broader efforts to strengthen online protections. The measures would require platforms to implement robust age-verification systems.
