Most Europeans Call for Stronger EU Unity Amid Rising Security Concerns

(MENAFN) A growing number of Europeans are concerned about security and safety amid rising geopolitical tensions, with a strong majority advocating for greater unity among EU countries to confront global challenges, according to a statement from the European Parliament on Wednesday.

The latest Eurobarometer survey conducted by the European Parliament indicates that security issues dominate public concerns across the bloc. Conflicts near EU borders rank as the top worry at 72%, followed by terrorism (67%), cyberattacks originating outside the EU (66%), natural disasters exacerbated by climate change (66%), and “uncontrolled” migration flows (65%).

In response, citizens are calling on the European Union to take stronger and more coordinated action. Almost nine in ten respondents (89%) believe EU member states should act more collectively when facing global threats, while 86% want the bloc to have a more influential voice internationally. Additionally, 73% said the EU needs more resources to address threats on a global scale.

The survey also points to a wider sense of uncertainty about world events. Over half of respondents (52%) reported feeling pessimistic about the future of the world, and 39% expressed concern about the future of the EU. Despite these worries, personal optimism remains high, with 76% feeling confident about their own future and that of their families.

European Parliament President Roberta Metsola commented that the results reflect citizens’ desire for a more proactive and united Europe.

"Geopolitical tensions shape Europeans’ daily sense of security. Citizens expect the European Union to protect, be prepared and act together. That is exactly what a stronger and more self-assertive Europe must deliver," she said.
