Experts state double standards from EU with US sanctions
The controversy followed a decision on Dec. 23 by the US administration to restrict visas for five European figures, including a former EU commissioner, over claims they pressured American digital platforms to censor or suppress US viewpoints.
Former Greek Finance Minister and economist Yanis Varoufakis, along with Brussels-based journalist Eric Bonse, commented on Europe’s response, highlighting the inconsistency.
Varoufakis described European centrist politicians’ opposition to the US travel ban as a clear display of hypocrisy. He recalled that he and others had previously been barred from entering Germany due to their opposition to Israel’s actions against Palestinians.
“Where were these same politicians when I and others were being banned from entering Germany because, along with German Jewish associates, we had the audacity to oppose the Palestinians’ genocide?” Varoufakis said.
Drawing a historical analogy, he compared Europe’s current political establishment to the Bourbon Dynasty restored after the French Revolution, suggesting it has failed to learn from past mistakes and remains disconnected from public needs.
“Like the Bourbons, Europe’s centrists seem to have forgotten nothing but also learned nothing from Europe’s sorry history,” he said.
In April 2024, Germany’s Interior Ministry had announced a ban on Varoufakis’ participation in political activities in the country, both online and in person, citing his pro-Palestinian statements, according to reports.
