Medvedev says Trump ‘wiped the floor’ with EU
In a statement on social media Monday, Medvedev, now deputy chairman of Russia’s Security Council, claimed that Trump had “wiped the floor with Europe.” He expressed sympathy for the European public, suggesting they were paying the price for their leaders' poor decisions.
Medvedev argued that while Trump’s focus is economic, EU leaders are driven by anti-Russian ideology. He noted the agreement effectively deepens Europe’s commitment to cutting off Russian energy imports—an effort he claims undermines European economies.
The Trump administration has long used tariffs as leverage to address trade imbalances. Without this deal, EU goods could have faced tariffs as high as 50%. Brussels had prepared retaliatory duties but ultimately accepted the US terms.
Russian officials, including Medvedev, have often accused EU leaders of being submissive to Washington, sacrificing their own economic interests in the process. Moscow has been particularly vocal about the EU’s move away from Russian energy, blaming the switch to more expensive US liquefied natural gas for the declining industrial output in Europe.
